The Austrian Federal Forest Office (Bundesamt für Wald – BFW) wants to control more imports of wood and wood products from non-EU countries this year. The goal is to prevent the import of illegally logged timber from entering the market. Nine large-scale inspections were carried out in 2020; this year, more than 30 are planned.
The Timber Trade Monitoring Act is currently being amended. The review period ran until the beginning of May 2021. In its statement on the amendment to the Timber Trade Monitoring Act, the Chamber of Commerce wants to see “much more open communication as well as transparency of requirements for our companies.”
